The wife’s pregnant, and she needs milk for breakfast in the morning. We’re out of milk. It’s 9:30, Sweetbay’s not closed yet. I’m off.

The first thing I head for’s the milk, because I know where it is. I rarely shop in this grocery store. I’m usually at the dirt Publix three blocks from the house because it’s closer. But, they’re closed by 9 and Sweetbay’s open, so I’m in a strange grocery store with a mission to find some nonstandard items.

On my way to the milk, I see Edy’s Grand ice cream is on crazy sale, two for seven bucks. Lunatic flavors, too… Coconut Pineapple? Cherry Chocolate Chip, red velvet style? Shit.

So now I’ve got the milk, and the ice cream, which is melting. Fiber One bars. Where the hell are those? Cereal aisle.

Not there.

I needed apples, and they’re right over there. Braeburn? Cameo! $1.39/lb – Bang.

Ice cream’s melting. Shit. Fiber One bars. Shit.

I stop two girls in Sweetbay garb, even though they’re clearly off the clock and doing their own shopping. They were cool, though, and after I looked at them somewhat frantically after getting off the phone with my wife who said, “Ask someone,” I asked them about where I could find, you know, “chewy granola chocolate chip things, like I thought I’d find in cereal, but it wasn’t there.” Aisle 5. Thank God.

Ice cream’s melting, and the lines at the register are thick, so I head back over to dairy to swap out my now-softened crazy flavored ice creams with fresher, colder ice creams from the cooler. And on my way there, I see this black dude that looks just like Samuel L. Jackson, and he’s wearing a do-rag, and a Tucci t-shirt.

Tucci, Tucci…. where have I heard that before? Oh yeah, Wanee Festival. Some local dude, like a dentist or something, with a blues band. Was this the same black dude who jammed at the campground jam, and that I’d chatted with for a while before Junior Brown’s set? No, this was a different dude.

By now, I’ve gotten fresh ice creams and decide to make a break for it. Oh yeah, Sprite Zero. The pregnant wife’s got some odd dietary habits lately. Got it, so now I pick the least of all evils and go for Checkout Lane Six.

In front of me is a guy in one of those personal scooter motorized grocery shopping go-carts. He’s flipping through the magazines and knocks all the People magazines from its shelf in the rack. They spill all over the floor. Do I help him out? After a short pause, thinking, Yeah I should help this dude, I go for it and, as I’m stooping down to pick up the strewn mess, I say, “Lemme help out with that.”

“Oh, I’m not crippled, I’m just feeling lazy today.”

Feeling lazy today? Was he serious?

Sure enough, as the line inches forward and he motors up to the conveyor belt, he stands up out of the seat to hoist a gallon of milk or six-pack of beer or something onto the conveyor. I thought for a moment whether I should say something to him, but thought better of it and just laughed inside, wondering if he parked in a handicapped parking spot outside with the same rationale.

Behind me, there’s a guy that looks like Robert Duval, wearing a CB radio type thing hanging from his breast pocket with one of those curly cords going down to some receiver on his belt. He’s talking to himself pretty loudly. I realize he’s probably talking to someone on a wireless phone headset, and sure enough after a brief moment, he turned his head and I saw the Bluetooth piece.

This wasn’t just “Uh huh,” or “yeah, lemme call you back when I’m out of the grocery store,” this was a fairly animated conversation about hauling something made of aluminum. If I weren’t helping the non-cripple in front of me, I probably could have recalled more details about his can’t-wait conversation.

Now I’m at the register, and Lazy, ahead of me, is having problems with the debit card swipe. The checkout lady, now resorting to the “plastic bag AND backwards” swipe trick, looks at Robert Duval behind me, then glances at me and all I have for her is my best Jim Halpert smirk. She smiles at me with a quiet laugh as the plastic bag trick works and we watch Lazy scooter himself out with his loot.

“It’s like a Seinfeld episode,” I tell her as I grab my receipt.

“I know, isn’t it?” she replies, as I leave the Sprite Zero sitting there, walk out to my car and drive home to remember just now about the Sprite Zero. Shit.

It was Friday night of Wanee Fest 2008 when Gov’t Mule was into its second set back at the main Peach Stage. Though I’d been dancing my ass off with the Mule and cherishing every second of this experience, I knew but one thing: I cannot miss Junior Brown.

Truth be told, Junior was one my primary reasons for shelling out $185 (after fees and taxes) for a 3-day ticket to this thing. I mean, yes I was dying to see Ratdog and yes I was dying to see moe. play again, but since starting my own guitar journey, Junior was the can’t-miss.

Apparently this was also the case for the flock of bluesmen who met me at the Mushroom Stage at 12:15 in hopes that even though the Mule was running its second set late (all the acts were running behind), we’d get a chance to be in FRONT for the Junior Brown set. I was pleased and relieved to know that my decision making process to leave a Gov’t Mule set in exchange for Junior Brown was sound, judging from the caliber of guitarists standing around me.

One of them was Tony Tyler, who I mentioned in a previous post. A wild frock of curly blonde hair and a goatee frame, I noticed him first as he approached the stage area. With him were a handful of other guitarists whom I’d seen the previous evening at the campground jam. More on the campground jam in a later post. Gladly, they’d been also driven to Junior’s set.

I struck up conversation first with their drummer, a young blonde kid that looked just like Derek Trucks. He gets that a lot, he said. Then, an older fella wearing a ‘Got Duane’ t-shirt with a mustache, the one playing the flametop Les Paul the night before. I told him I had recently picked up the guitar, and how I wasn’t the same since. He was very friendly and engaging — smart guy, I could tell right away, wish I’d gotten his name — and he even gave me some advice, loosely paraphrased here:

The way I get my tone is to crank the mids up as high as they can go, and then start bumping up the trebs and the bass until you get it right. I prefer my [tube] overdrive to be just just close to the breakup point but not distorted.

Then, conversation struck up with a second of the dudes from the night before. He told me that “all of these guys, we’re truly close friends,” and that they were from a smaller town in Georgia, I forgot the name. He motioned to the mustache fella, the blonde kid (Tony), and to a bunch of other guys, who I ended up chatting brienfly with about music, guitars, and Junior Brown.

I was very glad to be talking to these guys. It was surreal, as the night before I was in total awe of their guitar chops at the campsite jam, and now, here I was, getting to talk to them and jaw around about gear and tone and the festival, influences…. shit, I was in newbie guitarist heaven. It probably showed.

Below is one of the two short videos I caught of Junior Brown and Warren Haynes jammin’, tradin’ licks and havin’ fun. I believe they played Dust My Broom, and I know they ended with Johnny B. Goode, at close to 3am.

Photos from Wanee Festival – 2008 – Live Oak, Florida. I do not know the names of the guys in the campsite jam photos except Tony Tyler, the blonde headed fella on the right side. That dude could PLAY, folks lemme tell ya. He reminded me of a young Trey Anastasio. When I met him while waiting for Junior Brown to come onstage, I told him so. His face lit up, thankfully, as the weight of this conpliment didn’t escape him. Really, really nice guy… from somewhere up in Georgia. Apparently, all these dudes in the photos are musician buddies from wherever they live. I’d love to visit for a show or two, as these guys know their shit. They were remarkably friendly and approachable, all of them.

So Mike and Chris are talking again – as is Chris and Jim. All sorts of good old friends coming out of the woodwork lately.

Mike and I were in New Orleans on 9/26/99 for this photo at Cafe DuMonde. We were there for a Phish show, which we saw at the University of New Orleans Lakefront Arena. The show was somewhat uncomfortable because we were on the floor in front of the stage. In and of itself, this is a fantastic thing, obviously. The floor though, was solid concrete, and not at all like the lawns I’d become accustomed to seeing shows on. Good times – solid memories. Follow the ‘more’ link for the setlist and details. I’m priviledged to have gotten a torrent from Mike of this show, and I’m jammin’ to a wicked DWD right now. Thanks Chester!

Pardon the shaky hands – it was fuh-reeeezing. Oddly for Orlando, the weather was ice cold, and you can tell by my shivering camerawork. Buddy was spot-on with this free concert coinciding with the First Annual Orlando Blues-BQ. Food was a little undercooked and all they were serving was 16oz Miller Light and overpriced (yet curiously strong) cocktails. It was fun. Here’s the video.

These are from, kid you not, my first time playing out. It was in Berlin a few years ago, at a historic bar about a block from Checkpoint Charlie near the Wall. It’s called The Oscar Wilde Bar and was the first place people would go to have a “free” beer in West Berlin. It was full of posters plastered to the ceiling, exceptionally friendly people (we met people from all over that night) and a singer on an electric-acoustic doing crowd-pleasing singalong stuff. I had enough beer (the best stuff, called Kilkenny) to be cajoled into getting on stage and doing a few covers in front of complete strangers. Seriously, this happened, and it was awesome. What a great memory.

The setlist:

Chalkdust Torture (Phish)

Dirt (Phish)

Over the Hills and Far Away (Led Zeppelin)

I insisted, and still do, that I sounded like complete shit. The people I was with said it was awesome, but I think they were just being nice.
